There are many people who drink until the point where they are intoxicated and then get behind the wheel of motor vehicle.  They do it all the time, night after night, and hope they won’t get caught or get into an accident.  The primary fear however, is getting caught, not getting into an accident, for most people.

mq2DQE8There are two ways we know this. The first is that most of the anti-drunk driving commercials have slogans like, “Drive hammered, get nailed,” or “Sober or slammer.”  These are not randomly chosen slogans, or simply picked because they rhyme.  There are extensive focus groups and psychological data that shows what prospective drivers fear in terms of drunk driving. According to a recent news feature from Fox News, a man was celebrating his 34th birthday with a group of friends at a local hotel where the group was having a party.  San Diego Police say that the party-goers had been drinking that evening.

thirstyAt some point in the night, a female friend of the man decided she wanted to leave the party and would be driving her car home.  For reasons that are not made clear in the police account, the man decided he did not want her to leave the party.  It is not known if he was concerned about her possibly driving her car while drunk or whether he wanted her to stay for other reasons. When we think of traffic violations involving traffic lights, we typically think of running a red light.  However, according to a recent news feature from the La Crosse Tribune, a man was ultimately arrested and charged with a felony after a law enforcement officer witnessed him stopped at green traffic signal instead of driving through, as one is supposed to do.

green-light-texture-1187390You might be wondering why a police officer or sheriff’s deputy would have valid probable cause to pull someone over for stopping at green light.  The reason for this is because waiting at green light for an unreasonable amount of time is one of the many clues that a driver may be operating his or her motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs. These clues were developed, or more properly observed, by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after decades of roadside observations. Continue reading

As you may recall, Melrose Place actress Amy Locane-Bovenizer was found guilty in connection with a fatal drunk driving accident that occurred in 2010 in New Jersey.  In that accident, there were multiple cars involved and a victim was killed.  During her trial, defendant attempted to blame another driver for the deadly results but did not deny that she was drunk driving at the time of the accident.

Court records indicate that she was driving nearly 20 miles per hour over the posted limit and had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of around three times the legal limit of 0.08 grams of ethanol per 100 milliliters of blood.   Continue reading

These days, most people in Boston are familiar with Uber, Lyft, and possible other so-called ride sharing companies. For those that are not aware, you call for a ride on your smart phone via the company’s app and are told how long it will take for a driver to get to you.  You generally have a choice as to whether you want a black car similar to what people take to the airport for business trips or if you want a regular marked taxi, or a private vehicle driven by one of the company’s non-professional drivers.

barsignAs one might expect, this new business model makes licensed taxi drivers and other professional drivers and their respective employers very upset because it was costing them a lot of business.  They were also arguing that the new drivers did not need to pass official background checks or show a knowledge of the area and how to get to places around the city.  For example, many cab drivers are required to pass a map test whereas many Uber drivers clearly have no idea where they are going without assistance from the customer. Most people who live in an urban area such as Boston would probably say they live in the city with the worst drivers in America.  If you lived in Boston and gave that answer, you would be correct, according to a recent news feature from Yahoo Finance. The claim is based upon report put out every year by the insurance industry, and it includes the number of accidents and the number of drunk driving accidents in proportion to the population and the number of drivers.

The report, which is compiled by the insurance industry, is supposed to showcase the safest cities to drive in America, and while there any many cities at the top of the list, one city has to be at the bottom for being the most dangerous and in 2016, that “honor” falls on the city of Boston. beerhand Continue reading

Sure, they call it the “drive-in,” but they don’t mean it literally. drivein

Police in Weymouth, Massachusetts say that’s what happened recently when a drunk driver crashed into a drive-in restaurant and then took off.

The collision occurred around 2:45 a.m. at Jenna’s Drive-In. The fire department first received word of a problem when a resident awoke to see a vehicle on fire in his front lawn. The resident rushed outside and spotted the driver, looking dazed still in the driver’s seat. The resident shouted to ask if he was Ok. The driver then reportedly “just took off” on foot. The resident said he tried to stop him, but was unsuccessful. Authorities found the 29-year-old walking along a road a short distance away.

He was charged with DUI (second-time offense), and operating under the influence without a driver’s license.

It’s estimated the collision caused some $2,000 in property damage, though thankfully, no one was injured. Continue reading
