In a rather interesting set of circumstances, as described in a recent article from the Framingham Patch, a restaurant owner was arrested in connection with a drunk driving car crash involving another driver. There were actually two separate drunk driving accidents where two drivers left the Framingham restaurant and crashed into local police vehicles.  One case involved an alleged drunk driver crashing his Porsche sport utility vehicle into the back of a police cruiser, and the second case involved an alleged drunk driver crashing his sedan into the rear of a police SUV.

drivingAs part of their investigation into the second crash, the police suspected the driver of being very intoxicated and charged him with operation to endanger and operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol (OUI).  The police went to the last bar at which the driver was said to be drinking and attempted to obtain the video recording of the suspect consuming alcohol.

Tighter alcohol restrictions and stronger alcohol policies may be the key to unlocking lower drunk driving deaths among Boston’s youth. That’s according to a recent study by researchers at Boston Medical Centerbeer

The analysis was published recently online by the journal Pediatrics, and underscores the importance of alcohol control policies that are both strong and comprehensive in lowering the number of DUI-related deaths among young people.

As it stands, car accidents are one of the top causes of death among people under the age of 21 in the U.S. It’s particularly bad in Massachusetts, where 40 percent of all fatal car accidents involve a drunk driver and we are in the top 25 percent of states with the highest rates of youths who die in alcohol-related crashes.  Continue reading

An allegedly drunken bus driver in St. Louis reportedly left an entire college basketball team stranded – and risked the safety of countless other motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. The driver was reportedly stopped eventually, several hours after the team lost the game some 40 miles away in St. Bonaventure, New York. bus

The Washington Post reported the players snapped Instagram and Twitter photographs of themselves and teammates, napping, playing cards and talking on their cell phones as they lamented their “missing bus.” Troopers eventually located the driver via a GPS signal from an iPad left by the head coach on the bus. The driver at the time reportedly had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.22 – which is nearly three times the limit for all drivers and more than five times the limit for commercial drivers.

Drivers of commercial vehicles are not permitted to have a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.04 or higher. Her employer told the Post the 56-year-old had since been terminated from her job and that the company was “extremely disappointed and troubled” by her alleged actions.  Continue reading

In Salem, Massachusetts, jurors are trying to decide the fate of a Massachusetts State Police (MSP) trooper who has been charged and tried for crashing his motor vehicle while drunk resulting in the death of his passenger.  He was driving a vintage Chevrolet Corvette according to the Eagle Tribune.

gavel6The jury has so far been unable to reach a verdict and the deliberations will continue following the weekend recess. As for the alleged facts of this case, defendant, who had been with MSP for 14 years, was driving his 1965 Corvette when he crashed.  The passenger in his vehicle was a 55-year-old firefighter who was killed in the deadly drunk driving crash that has been alleged. Aside from everything else that happened in the November 8, 2016 election, voters in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts have just voted to legalize marijuana for recreational use in the state, joining a handful of other states and the District of Columbia.  Clearly many people are excited about this, and there are also those who voted against it.

marijuanaRegardless of our feelings about marijuana, based upon what we have seen in other states, there is a decent chance that more people will be using marijuana than there were prior to legalization.  While this can provide a great deal of revenue for the Commonwealth, there is also a decent chance that people will be driving under the influence of marijuana. According to a recent news article from the MetroWest Daily News, a woman has just been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving following an accident in the town of Natick, which is just west of Boston, Massachusetts.

drivingAuthorities have said the drunk driving arrest occurred around 5:30 p.m., which is when the crash occurred.  Police were first notified of a potential drunk driver when they got reports of a Honda Pilot SUV swerving back and forth across the road.  The police were then informed that the SUV struck a curb with a significant amount of force, and the two front tires were destroyed. There is very little question that alcohol can negatively affect one’s thought process.  This is one of the many reasons that drunk driving is dangerous and can and often does result in a serious car accident.   However, every so often, we see a news article where a person alleged to be driving under the influence of alcohol goes a step above and beyond the norm, and their seemingly strange actions make national headlines.

prisonAccording to a recent news article from Fox 25 News, a man was just arrested after he drove himself to the local sheriff’s station while he was highly intoxicated.  The reason this man was going to the sheriff’s station was to pick up another family member who had been arrested and held at the county jail but was scheduled to be released that day.  In other words, he was there to pick up a family member, and came to the jail while drunk. According to a recent news article from the Miami Herald, a United States Marine Corps (USMC) veteran spoke to the families of the three victims he admitted to killing in a drunk driving accident.  Prosecutors have said the accident occurred early on a Sunday morning just before the sun had come up.  There had been a minor traffic accident when some students at the local high school had collided with a car being driven by a 68-year-old woman.

prisonAnother man was driving with his eight-year-old son, and, when he saw the accident, he pulled over to see if he could offer any help.  At this point, defendant came driving down the road at speeds greater than 70-miles-per-hour and crashed into all three vehicles.  Three victims died in this horrific accident. According to a recent news story from the Boston Herald, an alleged drunk driver hit a pedestrian around 11 a.m. and fled the scene, leaving the victim lying face down on the road. Witnesses found the man lying in the street and immediately called 911.

When first responders arrived on the scene, they did what they could to stabilize the severely injured man before transporting him to a local level-one trauma center.  When he arrived at the hospital, doctors did what they could to save his life, but unfortunately, his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrive at the hospital. In a rather bizarre incident reported by KATU 2 News, a police officer alleged to have been responsible for a drunk driving crash in a city-owned vehicle. He reportedly struck up a conversation with arresting officers about fast food and whether a certain restaurant was “cop friendly.”

chicken-sandwiche-1-1563678Authorities have said the police officer, a 17-year veteran on the force, was working for the department’s gang unit and was off-duty, but “on call” while driving the unmarked police car owned by the city at the time of the alleged drunk driving crash.   The crash occurred just before two in the afternoon.
